Eco-Schools

The Eco-Schools programme provides a simple, seven-step framework that empowers our children to make a difference in our school, the local community and beyond. By following the programme our school will aim to use less energy, cut our carbon, reduce our waste and make school a greener and healthier place.

In 2024-25 we achieved the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction.

Our Eco-Squad

Our Eco-Squad is made up of a group of young people who, with the support of adult Eco-Coordinators, lead the Eco-Schools programme in our school. The Eco-Squad meet regularly throughout the academic year, plan and deliver environmental projects, and inspire their schoolmates and wider school community. Eco-Squad members are from a variety of year groups. Here are some of the reasons why the children have joined our Eco-Squad…

"I want to help the environment and make sure it stays healthy."

"Mummy makes me climb mountains every year and I want to make sure they stay beautiful."

"I want the world to be shiny and clean with no rubbish anywhere."

"I don’t want nature to be killed."

"I like nature and I don’t want it to get hurt."

"I don’t want to hurt nature and I want to protect hedgehogs – they’re my favourite animal."

"I love nature and I want to protect it."

"Nature is one of my favourite things in the world and I want to help save it."

"I love animals and wildlife, and I want to save them from being hurt by plastic."

"We can’t thrive without nature."

"The planet is in crisis and I have the determination and passion to save it."

Climate and Nature Bill

Our updated Eco-Squad board is now set up in the library area – please have a look next time you’re passing by. Our Eco Code is there for all to see. It is a whole school promise to protect our planet and demonstrates our environmental expectations and ambitions.

Pre-Loved Uniform

In a bid to help lower the carbon footprint of our school uniform, our second-hand uniform rail is located just outside the staffroom door and parents/carers are welcome to come and browse the items available. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please speak to Mrs Pallot as we have other items/sizes in storage.

Eco-Schools Programme 2025-26

In pursuit of our aim to achieve our Eco-Schools award again this academic year, we have recently completed our Environmental Review and we’ve now chosen our three key topics for the rest of this year:

Energy, Marine and Transport

Energy

We will be working as a whole school community throughout November to take part in the “Cut Your Carbon” challenge, with a particular focus on reducing food waste, travelling actively and spending more time off our devices.

Mrs Pallot and Mrs Worrell are meeting after half-term to crunch some numbers and see how we’re doing on our mission to reduce our school’s carbon footprint.

Eco-Squad have also challenged the teachers to an energy-free day when we host our next Eco WOW Day in April – we’re keen to explore different ways of learning together!

 Marine

We’re really excited to be taking part in the Recycle To Read campaign, turning broken plastic toys into book vouchers for our school. So if you’re having a tidy up over the holidays, please remember to bring any suitable toys to school so we can recycle them. Eco-Squad are also teaming up with Green Welford to help host the next clothing and toy swap on 15th November, so if you discover anything that you no longer play with, please consider donating it to our swap so someone else can have fun with it instead. The event is free to attend and you don’t have to have donated anything beforehand to come along and take something away.

As a whole school community, we will also be taking part in the Big Plastic Count in March – more information will follow in due course. Before that, we’re looking forward to welcoming Guilsborough School’s Eco-Squad for an afternoon of plastic-free Christmas crafting in December.

 Transport

In May, we’re looking forward to hosting a Walk To School week, with plenty of bonus Dojos available for any children who get really stuck in – we’re aware that some children live too far away to walk, cycle or scoot to school, but we will still challenge them to park further away from school and walk the last bit of their journey.

We’ll also be learning about the risk to our health caused by engine idling and will share what we find out with the wider community.

Let's Go Zero

Our school is proud to be part of the Let's Go Zero campaign, working with a dedicated Climate Action Advisor to create a tailored Climate Action Plan and embed sustainability into every aspect of school life. We are committed to becoming a zero-carbon school by 2030 and you can read more about our specific aims in our Climate Action Plan.
